Making amazing miniatures with cheese.

OK, not really cheese exactly, but it's cheese that inspired the project.

Since my idea of big fun is Halloween, and my idea of bigger fun is miniatures, and I am obsessed with pumpkins and also treat baskets that resemble pumpkins, I decided to make said treat baskets by using fine sand wrapped up in plastic wrap. I'd seen this trick in tips and tuts over the years and know that jack o'lantern makers do it that way.  I think they mostly use polymer clay. But I use Creative Paperclay a lot and have air dry clay in my hoard, so used that.

And it works. But its hard to get a nice and round little bucket, ball shape. For me.

Now, I had been saving the wax wrappers that come on those small cheese snacks. Because that wax is fun to play with and finally roll into a ball and then keep.  Because I might need wax balls someday. You get that right? You might have some in your stash just in case.

Yes,  you have seen these before.  Made with the wax balls.

This is how it goes:

Make sure the clay is  totally dry. You can and I have put them in a toaster oven to let the wax melt out - or just get soft to make digging it out easier.

The air dry clay is very easy to sand, where polymer clay would be more difficult to get thinner and smoother and not crack.  Plus you can't use wax with polymer clay.

It's easy to add embellishments to the dried clay, like the rims on the cauldrons.

I have done a few Christmas things with this technique, (see the candy containers below?) so you don't have to be devoted to Halloween or Harry Potter. Missing out on life is your choice.

By the way, all the other items (not the chest) in that photo were made with my Christmas freebie. Which you would have gotten if you were subscribed to my newsletter.
So if you would like to get future freebies, you had better give me your email - in that bar at the top.

You will get a free book kit with printie right away to make lots of books for any miniature setting because who doesn't need a lot of books?

Get it now because I swear my next one will be awesome. Which you will get because you gave me your email. Which I will guard with my life.

Like this idea. Almost bought a tub of air dry clay (Crayola) at Target last week. Will the homemade air dry clay work as well?

Yeah, it probably will. As long as it is hard when dry. I think the Crayola stuff is still soft when dry.

Have fun!

Lucy, I know. I always rolled that wax into a ball but then tossed it. It is fun to play with. Now you can do something mini with it!
